Astronomical images are not only beautiful, they expand our senses and so enhance our understanding of the Universe. A new selection of astronomical images, created by amateur and professional astronomers, photographers and artists from across Canada, celebrates 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy.
Although some images were produced by professional astronomers using large ground- and space-based telescopes, many others were made using no more than a basic camera and a willingness to stay up past others' bedtimes and look at the sky. See the images here |

Galileo Lecture Series of Québec |

Introduction In Québec, the FAAQ has initiated a Galileo Lecture Series that is in addition to the CASCA-sponsored national program. This program will bring excellent speakers to about ten cities around the province. Lecture organizers will have to provide a large event venue, and not charge any admission. Clubs and organizations are invited to organize large public lectures. The list of speakers as well as the list of lectures already organized follows. The FAAQ will coordinate the requests from clubs and, within the availability of the speakers, will organize a program that is optimized for all concerned. |

Canada Kicks Off International Year of Astronomy 1 January, 2009, Winnipeg: Astronomers across the country will host public telescope viewings and astronomy programs on January 10th, kicking off the Canadian celebration of the International Year of Astronomy. The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA2009) has been launched by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) under the theme, “The Universe, yours to discover”. Canada is one of 140 countries participating in IYA celebrations, with a year-long program of public activities and telescope viewing sessions aimed at introducing the cosmos to Canadians. |

Kingston Proclaims IYA Kick-Off Day |

On Tuesday January 6, 2009 a Proclamation application by RASC-Kingston Centre, Queen's University Astronomy, and Royal Military College of Canada for 2009 International Year of Astronomy was presented to Kingston city council at its weekly meeting. The Proclamation passed unanimously and January 10, 2009 has been Proclaimed as the Official Kick-Off Day for IYA in Kingston. |
